FATIMA MAWAS Presents Doing diversity in the Oz film and TV industry.
Mawas will present the strategies they have used to include authentic diversity in their work and explore the importance of collaborative approach when narrating political issues beyond immediate lived experiences.
FATIMA MAWAS is a fresh and daring filmmaker born and raised in Sydney’s Western suburb of Lakemba. Fatima’s films take on the themes of identity, racism, war, sexuality, religion and spirituality. Graduating from the Victorian College of the Arts and Australian Film Television and Radio School, they were selected for Screen Australia’s Developing the Developers 2017 program and have just written and directed a short film, commissioned by SBS and Film Victoria, titled Amar. Fatima wants to tell challenging, entertaining and thought-provoking stories reflective of true Australian culture featuring Muslim protagonists.
